How to Choose a Gynecologist to Help Cure Your Bacterial Vaginosis

By Kristi Patrice Carter

Choosing a new gynecologist can be a daunting task, especially if you have a condition that you’re worried about like a yeast infection or Bacterial Vaginosis. After all, this doctor will not only provide you with a treatment option but will also be involved in the most intimate areas of your private life, including your reproductive or treatment decisions. Therefore, it is essential that you find a gynecologist that you are comfortable discussing both medical and personal decisions with and one that you trust.

The first step is the most important step. Since you have a preexisting condition that you’re worried about, you must act quickly. After all, Bacterial Vaginosis is a situation that can cause extreme embarrassment and frustration. By quickly determining what you are looking for in a gynecologist, you’ll be able to find one quickly. So, before you begin your search, ask yourself a few simple questions, including the following:

  • Are you more comfortable with a male or a female doctor?
  • Is there a hospital in your area at which you would like to receive care? If so, then you should start looking for a doctor affiliated with that hospital.
  • Does this gynecologist specialize in Bacterial Vaginosis or other conditions?

The next step involves consulting the people you trust. Ask your general practitioner if they can refer you to a gynecologist. They often can provide you with the names of several doctors to consider. Also, talk to your friends about what they look for in a gynecologist. When you talk with your friends, be sure to tell them what you are looking for in a gynecologist and don’t be embarrassed about your condition. They have likely had a similar experience and may be able to recommend the perfect candidate.

Once you have created a list of three or four candidates, it is time to begin your investigation. You will want to start by consulting your insurance company. After all, you do not want to find that the gynecologist of your choice is not covered by your insurance coverage. You may also choose to do an Internet search on your top candidates. This may provide you with information that can be invaluable.

Next, contact each doctor’s office and ask them if they are taking new patients. If they are not taking on new patients, then they will not be able to provide care to you and, since you may have a condition like Bacterial Vaginosis, you don’t want to wait unnecessarily. You want to find treatment and you want it fast. You should also ask if they charge for an initial consultation. This will provide you with the opportunity to interview your prospective gynecologist.

Next, compile a list of symptoms and questions before your first appointment. This list will vary, according to your specific needs. However, your list of questions should include asking about treatment options, experience handling such situations, as well as their board certification, insurance, and after hour emergency procedures.

Once you do all this, you’ll not only have a great gynecologist to help cure your medical condition, but you’ll have chosen someone that can assist you for the long term. And, you’ll be proud of yourself for making an informed and thoroughly research decision. After all, your health is of the utmost importance and you deserve only the best!
